LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (April 15, 2023) – Florida National University’s baseball team cranked up the intensity to go 4-1 in Continental Athletic Conference play this season. FNU put together an 11-3 win over the Voorhees University Tigers to open up its stay at the CAC Showdown hosted by Georgia Gwinnett.
Veteran second baseman Alejandro De Arazoza was electric in the first inning, posting an RBI double to give FNU a 1-0 lead. The Conquistadors’ lead doubled in the second, as a sacrifice fly from Matthew Gonzalez allowed Jason Altuve to slide in for the score. FNU pitcher Mario Benjamin was calm and collected from the mound allowing no hits through the first three innings.
Through the third and fourth frames, De Arazoza bombed two-RBI homers to left field in each inning for a 6-0 Conquistador advantage. The Tigers managed to put a run on the board in the sixth off two stolen bases. This was a short-lived victory, as a costly walk in the bottom of the inning on Roberto Fernandez scored Jose Carpena.
Another De Arazoza homer, this time a grand slam, pushed FNU miles ahead of the competition with an 11-1 lead. The Tigers put up two runs and two hits in the seventh before falling 11-3. FNU ended the contest with 10 hits and no errors. The Tigers record six hits and one error.
