For junior and senior high school students, it’s never too early to prepare for college. Making the choice to attend college is just the beginning of the enrollment process. There are many steps to take to enroll in a college, so the earlier you start, the better!
First, you need to find the right college to attend, and if you’re strategic about your goals, you’ll be incredibly meticulous about this process because there are many big decisions that will need to be made.
One big decision that may heavily influence your choice is selecting the area of academics you want to study. Some colleges and universities specialize in a certain area of academia more than others. Your decision may also have to do with the location—yet, another factor that students will have to take into serious consideration when selecting which university to enroll in. Such decisions like these take a considerable amount of investigation and research.
Looking for the Right University
With the Internet at your fingertips, you can leisurely begin the search for the best university to earn your college degree. For starters, you can look right in your back yard. Consider all of the surrounding universities in your area. Even if you don’t have a desire to attend them, many of them have college preparatory programs designed just for high school students.
Florida National University (FNU), a regionally accredited university located in the South Florida region, offers the Dual Enrollment program for high school students. This advanced placement program gives high school students the opportunity to take credited college courses, giving high school students a jumpstart on their college education while giving them an idea of what college life is like.
The Dual Enrollment Program
FNU’s Dual Enrollment program provides students with a better chance at succeeding in college because they will have the opportunity to graduate earlier than their classmates. High school students can take up to two college courses per academic year, this equates to 3-6 credit hours of student loans you won’t have to take out for college.
One of the important things to know about the Dual Enrollment program is that there is no federal student loan aid for this program. In order to be eligible for federal student aid, one must be enrolled in a college on a part-time and full-time basis.
How Much Does it Cost?
The next concern thenmight be the cost. You can arrange how you’d like to handle your payment for the Dual Enrollment program through our Bursar’s Office. The cost per credit is $225.00—less than most universities in the surrounding area. Even though you’d have to pay out-of-pocket for the Dual Enrollment program, you’d not only be saving the amount that you might normally take out on a student loan, you’d be paying less overall.
Requirements
Junior and seniors are applicable for this program as long as they hold a grade point average of at least a 3.0.
In addition to holding an acceptable grade point average, high school students will need a letter of approval from a parent or legal guardian along with a recommendation from their teacher or counselor. From that point, the student will need to be interviewed by FNU’s campus dean. A non-refundable application fee of $50 is also required.

Taking college classes through FNU’s Dual Enrollment program is a great investment for aspiring college students financially and academically. Acquiring college credits as early as possible will bring you closer to your goal as a professional. While FNU cannot guarantee you a job after earning your degree, we can assure you that you will have increased your chances of landing a rewarding career that will most likely pay more than a job that doesn’t require a college degree. Depending on what type of career you want to pursue can also make all of the difference on the availability of an open position. What Kind of Classes are Offered Under This Program?
All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement Program in order for FNU to recommend which kind of college course is the right one for each applicant. The kind of classes you can expect to take under the Dual Enrollment program are general core courses like English Composition, Oral Communication, College Algebra, and Introduction to Information Technology. Because these are college-level courses, we require high school students to only take one class throughout the year so that they can still balance their high school
studies, and any other extracurricular activities and obligations.
Live Like a College Student
All high school students under the Dual Enrollment program will have access to all of the amenities that FNU students have. Dual Enrollment students will be able to attend campus events and take advantage of the Online Learning and Training Centers.
