LAUDERHILL, Fla. ( Nov. 18, 2022) – Following two tough losses, the Florida National University women’s basketball team conquered a much need win while on the road against the University of Fort Lauderdale. This 97-65 victory marks just the second win of the year for the Conquistadors. They have fallen to Warner University, Philander Smith College and Florida Memorial. Lauderdale now stands at 0-3 on the season falling to Ave Maria and Edward Waters College in their opening contest in the 2022 season.
In the first two quarters, FNU outscored the Eagles 48-33 on 18-41 shooting from the field. FNU’s 43.9 shooting percentage was a great sign of the team’s efficiency as they struggle to get back into any of their contest this season when shooting in the mid to low thirties. Despite trailing for more than half of the game up until that point, the Eagles went 5-7 from the three-point line. Natalie Larranaga had a stellar first half with 20 points in 19 minutes of play. Larranaga also shot 3-5 from behind the arc as FNU went into the break with a comfortable 15-point lead.
In the third, FNU outscored the Eagles 28-20 and shot in the high sixties for the period. Newcomer Kaylee Llanos had a slow start before coming alive in the second half with nine points compared to just seven in the first two quarters. The Conquistadors had a consistent showing from the field once again shooting the low sixties with just two minutes left in the period. FNU had an unfortunate time keeping the ball under control, giving up 14 turnovers in the third, but the eagles only had two fastbreak points to show for it in the period. This coupled with FNU’s large advantage led to the Conquistadors’ second solid win of the season.
Larranaga ended the night with a team-high 25 points to go along with five rebounds. Janelisse Marty Marrero had a near double-double for the evening with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.
