LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (May 4, 2024) – Florida National University’s baseball team (21-27) gave up four home runs and 28 hits in a 27-1 loss to the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies (45-6) to open the 2024 Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Baseball Championship Tournament. FNU had no answer for a talented GGC roster, throwing eight different pitchers on the mound in a futile attempt to slow down a rolling Grizzly offense.
GGC wasted no time getting runs on the board, taking a 4-0 lead at the end of the first. The Grizzlies cashed in scores on an RBI hit by pitch thrown by FNU starter Aliozmany Alonso. Three more GGC players made the trip back to home plate on a ground out to second and a two-RBI single by Joe Quelch.
GGC combined for 11 additional runs in the next three innings before posting nine runs in the fifth. FNU’s lone score of the morning came in the top of the fifth after Adrian Roman advanced to home plate on a rare RBI walk by GCC pitcher Kaleb Hill. This was only a prelude to the best inning of offense for the Grizzlies, which included a two-RBI homer by Quelch, a three-RBI double by Blaze O’Saben and a two-score single from Henry Daniels.
Ajay Sczepkowski’s two-RBI homer in the bottom of the sixth highlighted a three-run, four-hit inning for the home team. FNU has now lost six of its last seven games.
