HIALEAH, Fla. (March 24, 2021) — The Florida National women’s tennis team (0-6) fell to the No. 23-ranked St. Thomas Bobcats (5-5), 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon from the Goodlet Park.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead, winning doubles point. STU’s Annie Carrera and Lia Pena defeated the FNU pair of Michell Hurtado and Vanessa Simone, 6-1, while the duo of Vanessa Centeno and Amber Paterson downed Florida National’s Pirada Suwanruk and Karyna Krykunenko, 7-5. FNU’s Emerald Cooke and Paulina Jankun won from the No. 3 position defeating Giovanna Paschoalin and Thais Shibata, 6-4.
STU clinched the match taking five of the six matches in singles play as Hurtado fell to Carrera, 6-0, 6-1, Suwanruk lost to Pena, 6-3, 6-3, and Simone lost to Centeno, 6-0, 6-3. The Conquistadors got on the board as Krykunenko downed Shibata, 6-4, 6-2. The Bobcats added to their lead with wins in the two singles matches (Paschoalin defeated Cooke, 6-2, 6-2, and Sophia Perez defeated Jankun, 6-0, 6-2).
The Conquistadors will return to action on Saturday, April 3, hosting the Southeastern Fire. First serve for Goodlet Park is set for 2:00 p.m.
