LAKE WALES, Fla. (December 22, 2020) – Despite holding a 29-22 lead at the half, the Florida National women’s basketball team (1-6) fell to the Warner Royals (5-6), 60-52, on Tuesday.
The Conquistadors used a strong second quarter, shooting 46.7 percent during the second stanza while holding WU to just 23.1 percent shooting from the floor, to take a seven-point lead heading into halftime. Senior Deandra Akins scored nine of her 14 total points in the second, helping FNU outscore the Royals, 19-11.
However, Warner came out of the break finding its shot, scoring 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting to regain the lead and take a 44-39 edge on the scoreboard heading into the fourth. WU held off the Conquistadors, 16-13 in the final 10 minutes to hand FNU the seven-point loss.
Leading the Conquistadors in scoring was senior Adria Stewart, who finished the contest with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting (including five treys). Senior Breyuna Walker paced FNU on the boards, registering eight rebounds versus the Royals.
For the game, FNU shot 33.3 percent from the floor (20-of-60) and was 8-of-28 from 3-point range (28.6 percent). WU shot just 28.6 percent from the floor (16-of-56) and was 7-of-29 from downtown (24.1 percent). The difference in the game was the charity stripe as the Royals went to the line 29 times, converting 21 while FNU only attempted nine free-throws, making four.
The Conquistadors will return to action after the holiday break, facing the St. Thomas Bobcats in Miami Gardens on Wednesday, December 30.
