BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2021) – The Florida National softball team (1-4) split a midweek doubleheader at the No. 25-ranked Webber International Warriors (3-1) on Tuesday.
In Game One, the Conquistadors’ bid to knock off the ranked Warriors fell short as FNU lost, 4-3.
FNU was led by Zaira Nunez and Gabryella Hay who each went 2-for-3 from the plate. Nunez scored the game’s first run in the top of the first on wild pitch by Warrior hurler Emma Maitland. Nunez reached base on a lead-off single to center, advancing to third on a sac bunt by Nini Underwood and a single by Megen Johnson. Hay drove in two runs in the top of the fifth with a single up the middle, scoring Taylor Turner and Johnson.
Nunez’ run in the top of the first gave FNU a short-lived lead as WIU answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The Warriors took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second before Hay tied the game with her two-RBI single.
The Warriors regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, holding Florida National scoreless in the top of the seventh en route to the one-run victory.
Natasha Trujillo (0-1) suffered the loss in her first outing of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings pitched.
In Game Two, Nunez continued where she left off in the first contest, hitting 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored to guide the Conquistadors to a 7-4 win.
It was WIU which got on the board first in this contest, scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third. FNU tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth as Leslie Gutierrez singled up the middle to score Gabriela Oliveira from third.
FNU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Nunez scored her first run of the game on an error by WIU’s third baseman. The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to left.
It was a five-run sixth inning that broke the game open as FNU scored five runs on two hits in the inning, 7-2.
The Warriors tried to rally in the bottom of the seven, plating two runs to cut into the Conquistador lead but it was not enough as FNU upset WIU and earned the team its first victory of the 2021 season.
Hay (1-2) recorded her first win of the season allowing four runs while scattering eight hits in seven innings of action. The senior left-hander struck out six Warriors while giving up just one walk.
FNU will next host the Keiser Seahawks in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 13. First pitch of Game One is schedule for noon.
