PLANTATION, Fla. (March 19, 2023) – Florida National University’s baseball team was routed Sunday by the red-hot University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles, 16-1. FNU came into the contest fresh off a fiery 14-13 win over the Bobcats of Bryant and Stratton College Albany. The Eagles dominated Mid-Atlantic Christian University during their previous outing and picked up right where they left off on the diamond of South Plantation High School.
The Eagles lead 4-0 at the end of the first courtesy of a three-RBI homer and an RBI single after shutting out the Conquistadors at the top of the frame. They would score again in the second on a fielder’s choice as Matthew Gonzalez held the lone hit for the afternoon up until that point.
With the bases loaded in the fourth, FNU pitcher Erik Fuentes committed a costly walk to send in another Eagles runner to home for a 6-0 lead. In the fifth, FNU allowed five runs and six hits with one Eagles runner left on board. Fort Lauderdale went on to score five more runs and connect on two hits in the sixth for a 16-0 lead.
FNU finally broke through in the seventh as Alejandro De Arazoza advanced to home on an unassisted putout at first for Yordangel Gonzalez. The Eagles ended the game with seventeen hits and one error while FNU had two hits and one error.
