Conquistadors Advance in USCAA World Series with Walk-off Victory Over Carlow

BOX SCORE

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 18, 2021) – A sacrifice fly by freshman Gabriela De Oliveira in the bottom of the seventh gave the Florida National Conquistadors (26-13) a 6-5 walk-off victory over the Carlow Celtics (17-26-1) during the second round of the USCAA Small College World Series on Tuesday.

Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh, FNU used three hits to score two runs and come away with the team’s fifth-straight win. Following back-to-back singles by seniors Makayla Peralta and Nini Underwood, the Conquistadors drew even with the Celtics on an RBI-double to center field by junior Megen Johnson. With the winning run just 60 feet away, De Oliveria sent a fly ball to center field, scoring Underwood and sealing the win for the Conquistadors.

For Underwood, it was the third time she crossed the plate in the contest, batting 3-for-4. Johnson drove in two runs in the game, including the game-tying RBI in the seventh, going 2-for-4 from the dish. Peralta, who scored the game-tying run on Johnson’s double, registered two runs scored while batting 1-for-3 versus Carlow.

Senior Natasha Trujillo (11-5) picked up her second win of the tournament, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of relief action. Senior Gabryella Hay earned a “no decision”, giving up three runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.

The Conquistadors will return to action tomorrow, May 19, awaiting the winner of the St. Mary-of-the-Woods versus Mississippi University for Women contest. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
