PLANTATION, Fla. (April 26, 2023) – Despite putting together a 2-0 lead over the Fort Lauderdale Eagles, Florida National University’s baseball team fell behind before ultimately losing 13-4. The Conquistadors came up just short of breaking the program record for most wins in a season and fall to 13-16 in 2023.
The first inning was electric for the Conquistadors after a walk on Matthew Gonzalez allowed Erick Rodriguez to slide into home for the score. A single courtesy of shortstop Nick Diaz gave the Conquistadors a 2-0 lead before a strikeout on Adrian Roman retired the side.
The Eagles cut the lead in half with an RBI single before FNU’s fielders secure two flyouts to end the frame. Following two scoreless innings, the fourth proved extremely profitable for the Eagles, as they recorded 10 runs and six hits including a grand slam to blow the doors off this South Florida battle.
First baseman Yordangel Gonzalez helped stop the bleeding momentarily in the fifth on a single that batted in Alejandro De Arazoza. An uncharacteristic passed ball from the Eagles bought just enough time for Cameron Josemond to breeze into home to cut the lead to seven.
The Eagles notched two more runs before lightning and poor weather in the area called the game at the bottom of the fifth.
