If you’re incredibly gifted when it comes to dealing with numbers, then most likely you might be a talented mathematician. While pursuing a degree in Accounting or even Business Administration might be the more obvious route, you might want to take a moment to review all of your options when it comes to selecting the academic field of interest that you want to study. An academic curriculum that one might overlook is the field of Natural Sciences.
Why Major in Natural Sciences?
Enrolling in a bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences is just another option for those left-brain thinkers who lean more toward the logic, analysis, sequencing, computation, and the solid facts—not to mention mathematics! A Natural Sciences curriculum is the perfect program for such students to consider. While the right-brain thinkers seem more inclined to find a curriculum that involves more art- related creativity, imagination, and intuition, a Natural Sciences program can certainly benefit these students as well if this is the route they so choose.
What Do You Study?
While there are degrees for Nursing, Accounting, and Business Administration to also accommodate left-brain thinkers, these programs are typically more focused on just that. The Natural Sciences degree is a program with a broader focus on the prediction and comprehension of what is considered a natural phenomenon based on observational and factual evidence.
The study of natural sciences in general is about seeking to understand how the world—and universe works as a whole. Within this field of study, FNU offers these branches:
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Biology
In actuality, the five can be separated into two main branches:
- Chemistry
- Biology
Some Natural Sciences programs may not offer all five branches, as it may not be relevant to the field of study academically. It’s recommended to speak directly with your guidance counselor to get a better understanding of how some of these branches are implemented into the Natural Sciences degree program.
In this curriculum, students will study the science of accuracy, validity, as well as the social mechanism that affects quality control. They will then discuss these findings with their peers as well as study on an individual basis.
What Can You Do with a Natural Sciences Degree?
With a bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences, students can customize their major so that it’s designed to match their personal and professional career goals. Depending on the college or university, you can choose between a variety of courses, but what is highly recommended is to find a Natural Sciences degree program that will give you a basic background in Biology and Chemistry—subjects that are most useful for pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, pre-dentistry, teaching, and other professions that require a general understanding of natural sciences—and the need for talented mathematicians!
More About the Natural Sciences Program
The Natural Sciences degree program at Florida National University (FNU) incorporates the course work needed for admission to most medical, pharmacy, and dental programs. While successful completion of this program doesn’t guarantee acceptance into graduate study, students pursuing this option can take advantage of all of the resources that FNU has to offer.
There are several FNU students who have found success with a bachelor’s in Natural Sciences. Read about FNU student Rachel Bibilonia’s story as a Natural Sciences major, and how she got assistance from the FNU administration to reserve an early seat in dentistry school here.
