MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Dec. 10, 2023) – Florida National University’s women’s basketball team ends another week of play in the 2023 season with less than favorable results. The Conquistadors lost 103-42 to the NCAA DII Barry University Buccaneers in Miami shores, Fla. Barry (5-4) had recently survived a tough battle with Florida Memorial University the previous day, capturing the win 71-64. Florida National (2-5), on the other hand, outscored the Trinity Baptist College Eagles 23-6 in the fourth for a 69-62 comeback win on Dec. 7.
Through the first two quarters, center Tyra Kirlew led all FNU players with 10 points on 4-7 shooting from the floor. Despite Janelisse Marty Marrero not being too far behind with eight points in the first half, FNU trailed 42-28. The Bucs outrebounded FNU 33-22 and Audrey Jennings posted a team-high nine points, as FNU looked to regroup heading into the third quarter.
Barry was electric in the second half, truly shutting the door on an FNU comeback. The Bucs outscored FNU 61-14 in the second half, holding Marty Marrero scoreless through eight minutes of play through the third and fourth quarters. Catalina Valenzuela had a rough afternoon with just three points and five turnovers. Barry shot 39.2% to close out the game and had a stellar 26 offensive rebounds.
Kirlew’s 10 points were the most scored by an FNU player in this contest, while Marty Marrero and Louise Pilley posted eight points each.
