MIAMI, Fla. ( Nov. 6, 2023) – For just the second time in program history, Florida National University’s women’s basketball team fell by double digits to a loaded NCAA DI Florida International University Panther squad. FNU’s 113-30 loss at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center was a difficult ball game for the Conquistadors, as they tallied 33 turnovers and failed to get shots through the net when they needed it most. The last time these two teams met was November 30, 2023, when FNU lost 96-38 on the road.
In the first half, FNU went into the break trailing 57-20 with Janelisse Marty Marrero leading the way with 12 points. Notably, FNU had a couple of threes at the start of the ball game, coming from Gabriela Solis and Adalis Arroyo.
Turnovers for the Conquistadors seemed to take their toll as FNU coughed up the ball 17 times and gave up 27 points as a result. Along with a stifling defense, the Panthers’ stellar scoring kept them well ahead of their competitors. FIU shot 48% from the field and 37% from the three-point line and FNU hovered at 22% shooting through two quarters.
In the second half, FIU continued their defensive intensity, holding FNU to an unprecedented 4% shooting from the field at one for 26. FIU’s bench was electric, posting thirty points in the second half while holding FNU to zero fastbreak points down the other end.
Marty Marrero and Solis combined for 16 of FNU’s 30 points, while eight solid points from Arroyo were all positive signs for the Conquistadors moving forward. FIU’s Mya Kone and Tanajah Hayes had 17 points each, and Kone also grabbed 14 rebounds.
Up Next: FNU hits the road again, this time to West Palm Beach, Fla., for a 5:30 p.m. game against Keiser.
