HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 30, 2023) – Florida National University’s women’s soccer team faced a juggernaut Florida College Falcons offense on Monday and collected its eighth loss this season. FNU (0-8-2) fell 5-1 to the Falcons (3-9-4) at Milnader Park, despite tying the game 1-1 in the second half. The Falcons previously handed FNU a statement 6-2 loss on their home turf Sept. 28.

In the first, FC’s Marta Cuenca got the Falcons on the board first on a wicked free kick outside the penalty area that went straight past the reaching hands of goalie Andrea Oropeza. Florida College was dominant in time of possession and posted 14 shots in the period, FNU was held to just four attempts.

When play resumed in the second, FNU’s leading goal scorer Johanna Andersson laced in her fifth goal of the year and her third in Continental Athletics Conference (CAC) play on a costly mistake from FC’s backline that left a skillful Andersson in an easy one on one battle with goalie Jillian Francis

With the game standing at 1-1, FC broke through with two goals in a matter of minutes. The first came on a header from Angie Sciacca set up by a corner taken by captain Yaritza Vasquez in the 71st minute. One minute later, a smartly paced ball by Paula Rincon Carrill allowed Alexis Lamprell to make it a 3-1 affair with just 18 minutes left on the clock.

Before the match was mercifully called to an end, Falcons star Sciacca picked up her second goal of the afternoon on another corner from Vasquez and Claribel Hernandez put up the final Falcons goal of the game in the 83rd minute.

The Falcons racked up 25 shots to FNU’s 12. Oropeza had nine and faced 13 shots on goal.
