HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 9, 2023) – Florida National University’s volleyball team swept two out of the three Continental Athletic Conference’s (CAC) weekly awards. Junior Layla Cortez and sophomore Ivette Sandoval were named attacker and defender of the week, respectively, following FNU’s 3-2 stay at the CAC Classic hosted by Fisher College.
Cortez was electric for the Conquistadors last week, posting 80 kills and two 20-kill games. Sandoval had 44 digs and 104 assists over her five matches played.
“The Miami, Florida, native posted 20 kills in a pair of matches. The outside hitter began the invitational with 20 kills in a 3-1 win against Crowley’s Ridge College (Arkansas) last Friday,” The CAC’s press release said. “She then added 20 kills in a five-set loss to Crowley’s Ridge on Saturday. Cortez was successful in 26.3% of her spikes within the five matches.”
Regarding Sandoval the CAC said, “The Miami, Florida, native had 17 digs and 18 assists in a five-set setback in last Saturday’s meeting with Crowley’s Ridge. She then collected 22 assists and seven digs to help secure the Conquistadors’ second victory of Friday’s action.”
FNU is back on the court Tuesday at Bucky Dent Park for a 7 p.m. match versus the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
