WEST POINT, Ga. ( Sept. 11, 2023) – The Conquistadors men’s soccer team continues to run through their opponents, racking up its fourth win in as many games with a 4-1 win over the Point University Skyhawks (0-3-0). FNU (6-1-0) came into this battle in West Point, Ga., fresh off a dominant 5-0 win over the Brewton-Parker Barons on Sept. 9.
Despite coming into this afternoon’s showdown on an offensive kick, FNU had to play from behind early after Point’s Jacob Illmer got his team on the board in the 19th minute. But FNU continued its trademark pressure on offense, tying up the game on a score from captain and midfielder Vinicius Mallmann.
FNU’s Christian Omar Hernandez and Richardo Delwing followed up Mallman’s goal with dangerous shot attempts that just missed the mark. Newcomer Juan Pugin was finally able to slide a shot attempt past Point goalie Simon Niksch to give FNU a 2-1 lead with 35:15 on the clock. The Conquistadors ended the period with a game-leading 14 shots and were awarded all four corners in the first half.
In the second half, FNU was held to a one-goal advantage for the majority of the period despite getting off 11 shots and taking six corner kicks. With 86 minutes surpassed, Geronimo Luna Grebe scored his second goal in two games followed by an 88th-minute score from veteran Francisco Crimi assisted by Manuel Rodriguez.
Crimi’s goal brought about an end to a thrilling victory and signaled a perfect 2-0 Georgia road for the NAIA’s No. 19 Conquistadors.
