VIERA, Fla. (March 6, 2023) – Florida National University’s softball team narrowly pulled out a win over the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles Monday to earn six straight victories. FNU survived a low-scoring battle, thanks in part to some clutch scoring from the Continental Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week Yleisha Perez and senior shortstop Megen Johnson.
FNU got on the board right away on a sacrifice fly from Ana De Oliveira Obando that scored Perez and put Johnson in scoring position at third. A single toward left field from Janessa Esquibel was just enough to push Johnson in for the 2-0 Conquistador lead in the first.
Pitcher Dakota Kulis was calm and collected from the circle allowing just four hits in seven innings of play. She produced two strikeouts and walked just one Golden Eagle batter in the win. She now holds a 5-3 recording from the circle this season.
Cornerstone made things interesting at the bottom of the sixth, as a single to center field scored a Cornerstone batter and cut FNU’s lead to just one. After failing to tack on some more runs at the top of the seventh, FNU’s defense went to work to close out the game as a ball thrown from Johnson to Perez got the second out of the inning.
FNU secured the win on a ground out to second base. The Conquistadors recorded six hits to the Golden Eagles’ four as FNU had the lone error of the afternoon.
