AUGUSTA, Ga. (March 4, 2023) – Florida National University’s baseball team split a highly competitive doubleheader versus the Voorhees University Tigers Saturday. FNU secured a 7-5 win in game one and then lost 9-5 in game two. This trip to Augusta, Georgia, marks a four-game, two-day trip, where FNU will face host Paine College tomorrow at noon.

In game one, the Conquistadors jumped to a 2-0 lead after Roberto Fernandez and first baseman Yordangel Gonzalez scored one run apiece. Pitcher and designated hitter Ian Labrador scored another run in the second after Cameron Josemond was flied out at left field.

Voorhees finally got on the board in the third with a two-RBI double to cap off a two-run, two-hit inning for the Tigers.

In the fourth, a home run bomb from Alejandro De Arazoza to left field opened up a solid hitting performance from FNU in the inning. Daniel Reyes and Labrador each collected a run apiece as FNU recorded three runs, four hits and had one runner left on before retiring the side. A Fernandez run in the fifth was just enough to keep the Tigers at bay over the final stretch of game one.

Game two saw FNU fall behind early after giving up two runs in the first and allowing three hits before getting back on offense. Eduardo Ponce got FNU on the board first with a run scored on a pop-up to right field. But the Tigers scored two more runs at the bottom of the third to gain a 4-1 lead. Fernandez hung another run on the board for the Conquistadors but it was overshadowed by three Tiger scores at the bottom of the fourth.

In the sixth, Fernandez, Gonzalez, and De Arazoza ran in a score before Voorhees essentially closed out the game with a two-run, three-hit inning with two runners left on.

FNU stands just one game shy of tying last year’s win total.
