BOCA RATON, Fla. ( Dec. 6, 2022) – Florida National University’s women’s basketball team suffered another tough loss against a top NCAA Division I school in the Florida Atlantic University Owls. The Conquistadors (3-4) feel 94-33 to a talented FAU (6-1) squad loaded with talent from top to bottom. FNU remains 3-4 following this loss to the Owls and has played its final exhibition match of the 2022-23 season.
The first period saw an absolute explosion for the Owl on offense, jumping to a 34-5 lead. FAU shot 56.5% from the floor as Dyllan Hanna had a 10-point opening quarter to welcome the Conquistadors to Boca Raton, Fla.
FNU’s Janelisse Marty Marrero and Tyra Kirlew claimed all of the Conquistadors’ points in the period. Marrero iced a solid three-pointer and Kirlew rolled in a layup before the quarter expired.
In the second frame, FNU’s shooting woes improved as the Conquistadors shot 31.3 from the floor scoring 11 points before each team retired for halftime. FNU’s Natalie Larranaga made an offensive splash with six points and two steals. Marrero ended the half with six points. Despite showing some life on offense, FAU still outscored the Conquistadors 23-11 and held a 57-16 lead at the break.
As the second half kicked off, FNU continued to put in its best effort against a solid FAU performance on the court. The Owls went 7-17 from the floor for 24 points. Larranaga led all FNU scores with ten points up until that point in the match and FAU had four players in double figures before the quarter ticked to a close.
In the final period, FAU put the finishing touches on a stellar offensive and defensive performance, where the Owls forced 30 FNU turnovers over the entire contest. FNU hung in the Owls in the early goings of the fourth with each team scoring four points halfway through the quarter.
Larranaga led FNU with a near double-double tallying 12 points and eight rebounds.
