MIAMI SHORES, Fla. ( Nov. 29, 2022) – The Florida National University men’s basketball team fell short of its first exhibition match victory of the season falling 91-61 to the Barry University Buccaneers. The Conquistadors’ losing streak continues as they have fallen in five of their last six contest yet still hold onto a 1-5 record. The Buccaneers were in serious need of a win after dropping an unexpected loss to RV St. Thomas University on November 22, 83-82.
In the first half, FNU was keeping good pace with the Buccaneers trailing 27-37 at the half. Gabriel Casillas had a team-high seven points and three rebounds as FNU was seeing production from all five of its starters. Ryan Sanchez, Jovan Debrito and Girardi Cubillan had five, four and six points respectively as the Conquistadors shot 38% from the field.
FNU and Barry looked to push the tempo of the game early, recording 14 and 16 points respectively in the painted area. Unfortunately for the Conquistadors, they gave up 10 turnovers that resulted in 11 easy points for the home side.
As the second half rolled around, Barry shot a stellar 52% from the floor to end the match and went 10-27 from behind the three-point line. The Buccaneers’ bigs outrebounded FNU 46-24 and Barry put up 50 points in the paint to FNU’s 26.
Sanchez ended the night with 14 points and four assists while Casillas put up 12 points and four rebounds.
