GI Bill Benefits Information
Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
If your service ended before January 1, 2013, your Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) benefits will expire 15 years after your last separation date from active service. You must use all of your GI Bill benefits by that time, or you’ll lose whatever’s left.
If your service ended on or after January 1, 2013, your GI Bill benefits won’t expire thanks to a new law called the Forever GI Bill – Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act.
Tuition and fees – If you qualify for the maximum benefit, the VA will cover the full cost of public, in-state tuition and fees. GI Bill money for housing (is based on Rate of Pursuit greater than 50%) – You may be eligible for a monthly housing allotment (MHA). The rate is variable and dependent on factors such as the school location, rate of pursuit, onsite or online modality, and whether you enrolled into a program prior to 1/8/18. MHA’s are paid directly to the student at the beginning of each month for the previous month.
Money for books and supplies – If eligible, you may receive up to $1,000 per academic year, paid proportionally based on enrollment.
Yellow Ribbon Program – If eligible for the maximum benefit under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, this program permits the school and the VA to provide matching funds to cover all or a portion of the outstanding amount of established charges not covered under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (MGIB-AD/Chapter 30)
Chapter 30 can assist in paying for your education. It has four eligibility categories, and the GI Bill benefits generally apply to Veterans who began active-duty service for the first time after June 30, 1985, had their pay reduced $100 a month for 12 months, and received an honorable discharge. Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR/Chapter 1606)
Chapter 1606 is an educational program administered and paid by the VA that offers up to 36 months of benefits. It is for members who are actively participating in the Selected Reserve components include the Army Reserve, Naval Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, and Air National Guard.
