MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 24, 2021) – The Florida National softball team (2-7) split a Wednesday night doubleheader at St. Thomas (1-1), winning the first game 7-5 and dropping Game Two, 4-2.
In the first game, the Conquistadors scored three runs in the top of the seventh to knock off the Bobcats in their season opener, 7-5. FNU rattled off nine hits in the victory and was led Julia Frank, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the contest. It was Frank’s RBI double in the top of the seventh that gave FNU the two-run advantage.
Brandi Kirkpatrick earned the victory, tossing one and two-thirds innings of shutout relief.
In game two, FNU tried some late-inning heroics again but came up short, dropping the contest, 4-2. Trailing 4-0 in the top of the seventh, a double by Gabryella Hay drove in two runs to cut the Bobcat lead to two. However, the Conquistadors were unable to plate any more runs, suffering the 4-2 loss. Hay went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Madison Bradshaw went 3-for-3 from the dish while Megen Johnson hit 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Kirkpatrick was handed the loss, allowing one run (unearned) on one hit in two innings of action.
The Conquistadors will host the Edward Waters Tigers on Friday, February 26. First pitch for Game One of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
