TAMARAC, Fla. (January 28, 2021) – The Florida National women’s tennis team (0-1) dropped its season opener to the St. Thomas Bobcats (1-0) on Thursday afternoon, 6-1.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles portion of the match, 3-0. STU’s Amber Paterson and Vanessa Centeno defeated the FNU duo of Vanessa Simone and Michell Hurtado, 6-1, while at the No. 2 spot, Sofia Victoria Pera and Karyna Krykunenko fell 6-1 to Lia Pena and Annie Carrera. FNU’s Daniela Millan and Julia Silva Ramos lost a 6-0 decision to the Bobcat’s Giovanna Paschoalin and Thalia Skeene (No. 3).
STU claimed five of the six singles matches to claim the contest, 6-1, as Victoria Pera lost to Paterson (6-4, 7-6[7]), Simone fell to Carrera (6-2, 6-1), Krykunenko lost to Pena (6-0, 6-0), Hurtado fell to Centeno (6-3, 6-1), and Emerald Cooke suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Paschoalin. Paulina Jankun registered the Conquistador’s lone point with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win over Skeene.
The Conquistadors will return to action on Saturday, January, 30, taking on the Stetson Hatters in DeLand, Florida. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
