Florida National University and the IRS-VITA Program Serve the South Florida Community

FNU Students receiving award for participating in IRS-VITA

Florida National University (FNU) worked with the Internal Revenue System (IRS) for the upcoming 2014 Tax Season. As most of us know, the Tax Season runs from January to April of every year. This year, like last year, FNU participated in the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program by helping members of the community fill-out their income tax return forms. The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $50,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities.

Students enrolled in FNU’s Business Programs and graduates, were certified by the IRS to provide support to the community during that period by participating directly in the process of filing taxes. The students and graduates were trained by specialist to provide the highest level of service to members of the community during the Tax Season. Beginning in January of 2014, the University offered training sessions to volunteers. The sessions were held on Fridays and Saturdays. The idea was to have a bigger pool of individuals willing to be involved in this activity.

Florida National University’s Business Department wishes to recognize Arcely Mendoza (Business), Ernesto Flores (Accounting), and Karla Mena (Accounting graduate) for their participation in this 2014 VITA program Edition. Additionally, we want to thank Ana Raposo (IRS representative), and the Honorable Mayor Tomas Regalado from the City Hall of Miami for supporting and appreciating these students for dedicating their time to help our community.

This collaboration between FNU and the IRS started in 2011 and there is a high expectation from both organizations to continue to their partnership in the years to come.
